For part one of a peek in my film archives, read this:
Behind the camera
Listen I’m no Lindbergh but here are film pictures I love and some words behind them. Every memoir has a break for images!!!
I’m deciding that actually, you can repeat the past, old sport. Because two things are true today: Charli XCX is releasing a music video for “party 4 u”, and I’m tired! So here’s part two of me digging through the digital crates to bring you stories behind some of my favorite film pictures from the past 4ish years.
The best part of taking film is never knowing how a picture will turn out (which can just as easily be the worst part, especially when you’re not the one taking it). It’s even better when a seemingly routine “will you take a picture of us?” kind of photo ends up becoming one of your favorites. It’s the way the hues mesh together, the dimension, the accidental perfect framing, the way you know it’s early spring: this belongs in the Louvre…down the back, butwhocares.
Winter always ends up being sneakily perfect. I’m a December baby, so maybe I’m bias, but January and February usually rank pretty high too when I reflectively look back on my year. I think because expectations are pretty low across the board—everyone’s all, i dOn’T leAvE thE hoUsE, but…then you do, and it’s the Best. You wear your Super Puff, you scurry to the closest bar, you order an Espresso Martini, and you lose track of time.
The teachers are on spring break, Kelee’s vlogging, and most of my team at my job was just laid off. It’s the first nice day of spring in the middle of the week, and we all say, to hell with it. We go to brunch (packed), we walk to the other side of the city, we go to a dive bar (not packed), we split off, we meet up with other friends, we end up at a rooftop bar. 12 hours after the day started, I’m in bed. When you have a Saturday like that, it’s lovely but expected. Having a Wednesday like that, as a full-fledged adult member of society, well, that’s show biz baby!
Of course, this is a glimpse of the famous Casino de Monte-Carlo, taken right before hopping on a Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour around Monaco. A highlight of last year, to say the least. I’ve done my fair share of red bus tours around both foreign and domestic cities (including my own!) and it remains the most effective way to see the highlights that I would recommend to anyone. Monaco is the second-smallest country in the world, so I’d even say we saw it all.
I’m most interested in capturing the inbetween moments. Unposed with no warning. The morning of my sister’s wedding was rainy and we were both under the weather, but you’d never know from the full roll of film I took. This is by far my favorite picture from the roll, maybe even the whole weekend—I love how the rain brought out the lush green and how I caught a pre-reception moment of calm. That’s amore!!!
After thinking about it for a full 24 hours since the idea was dropped on my lap, I decided to fly to Cincinnati for less than a day to see Pitbull and T-Pain last fall. The tickets were VIP, free, and Frontier was built for moments like these, right? Maybe you’d be able to predict this, but I was unaware I’d know every single song and end up having one of the best concert experiences ever. Absolutely say yes to the Pitbull concert, every time.
To see more, follow me! If you need me, I’ll be baking…
